Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is a restorative dentistry procedure that can be performed to salvage a severely infected tooth. Although root canal therapy has a reputation for being an uncomfortable procedure, we are able to make it as pain and stress free as possible thanks to the advanced dental technology we feature in our office.
Root canal therapy involves removal of the infected pulp at the center of a tooth. After examining x-rays of your tooth to determine the level of decay or infection, Dr. Barbosa will anesthetize the area surrounding the damaged tooth and clean out the bacteria and debris from inside the tooth. Once the infection is removed, the tooth will be sealed, and, in most cases, a crown will be placed to protect it from further damage. We are often able to perform root canal therapy and prepare the tooth for a crown during the same appointment.
Tooth Colored Fillings
Dental crowns cover the entire surface of a tooth like a cap. A durable porcelain crown can be used to restore the strength of a decayed or damaged tooth, and can also be used to hold a dental bridge in place. In addition to the restorative dentistry uses for dental crowns, they can also be used to conceal cracks, chips, or discolorations.
To place a dental crown, we first take an x-ray to determine the extent of tooth decay, and then Dr. Barbosa prepares the tooth to accommodate the crown. In some cases, a severely decayed tooth may require root canal therapy before we can place the crown. We will then take an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth. The technicians at our dental laboratory will use this impression to custom-craft the crown to ensure a perfect fit. When your crown is ready, it will be adjusted to sit comfortably in your mouth, and will be bonded in place.
Dental bridges fill in gaps left by missing teeth to recreate the appearance and function of a full set of teeth. A bridge is composed of an artificial tooth that is placed in the gap and held in place by crowns attached to the remaining teeth on either side. Bridges facilitate proper chewing and speaking, and help to prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of alignment. In addition to the restorative benefits of bridges, they also offer many cosmetic benefits.
Often the supporting bone recedes from the teeth without visible gum recession. This creates a pocket which fills with bacteria. Your body attacks these bacteria and also destroys the supporting bone attached to the teeth. This is called Periodontal Disease and will lead to loss of teeth as well as overall health problems if untreated. Dr. Barbosa will do a complete periodontal exam on every patient to ensure the foundation of their oral health is in tact. During this exam a probe is used to measure the depth of space between your teeth and your gums. If diagnosed with Periodontal Disease, you will receive Scaling and Root Planning also called a deep cleaning. Dr. Barbosa also uses a technology to screen for cancer. An oral cancer screening should be performed annually.
Fillings are used to replace parts of a tooth which have become decayed. We offer tooth-colored or white fillings. To place the filling, the decayed portion of the tooth will be removed, and the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. Next, the filling material will be placed and bonded in the prepared tooth. Then, the filling will be trimmed and polished to complement the shape and texture of your natural teeth.
